Labor Thanksgiving Day - Kinro Kansha no Hi
Novermber 23rd

On November 23rd, Japan celebrates Labor Thanksgiving Day to express gratitude to one another for work done throughout the year. Labor Thanksgiving Day in Japan is a national holiday.
The celebration is one of the oldest on the Japanese calendar. This time of year was formerly known as "Niinamesai", the equivalent of Harvest Festival in many countries. It is believed that the festival was celebrated as early as November of 678.
During this time, local communities would harvest their first crops of Japan's famous agricultural product, rice.
They offered it to the "kami", spirits, at their local shrine or temple to pray for a fine harvest and healthy crops in the year ahead. This practice still continues in rural Japan, while in Tokyo, the Emperor holds a private ceremony at the Imperial Palace each year to continue the wish for growth and health.
On Labor Thanksgiving Day in Japan, events are organized across the country. All government offices and schools remain closed for the holiday on November 23. These events encourage people to think about the environment, peace, and human rights. School children in Japan create drawings for the holiday and present them as gifts to the local police stations.
