Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund

In response to the catastrophic earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan on March 11, JASGA has launched an emergency relief fund that will be used to aid relief and recovery efforts in the Tohoku (northeastern) area of Japan. Austin has grown to be an international city, and many people in the community are trying to help by donating money to Japan-America Societies.

The funds will be sent to organizations involved directly with relief efforts in northeastern area of Japan, where more than 300,000 people are currently staying in temporary shelters and lack sufficient food.  All contributions are tax-deductible.

On behalf of the Japan-America Society of Greater Austin,  we are pleased to announce that with the funds which have been generously donated to date, we have committed $9,000 to three Tohoku (Northeastern) prefecture governments (Iwate, Miyagi, and Fukushima) in Japan to provide both immediate humanitarian relief and long-term recovery of the devastated areas.  Each prefecture government received $3,000 on August 30, 2011.  We would like to thank City Bank, NA for outstanding advice and financial services in support of the 2011 Japan Relief Fund.

We will continue to collect the donations and facilitate the fundraising events and programs, and plan to send funds in December to support over 1,100 young victims in Japan through Ashinaga, the NPO that has been providing financial aid for children who have lost parent(s) or have parents with disabilities.
