As part of Japanese Martial Artsl series in 2017, JASGA presents Okinawan Kobudo demonstration with Shihan Ty Yocham at Austin Okinawan Karate..

Austin Okinawan Karate chief instructor Ty Yocham and his students invite JASGA community to a kobudo demonstration on Wednesday, Sept.ember 6 from 7-8 p.m, in the gymnasium of NYOS Charter School (12301 N. Lamar Blvd. Austin TX.).

Kobudo or “old martial arts,” refers to the traditional weapons used in the Ryukyu Kingdom (1429-1879) is now Okinawa, Japan.
 
Austin Okinawan Karate will discuss the evolution and use of popular martial art weapons including the 6-foot staff, nunchaku, tonfa and sai. Participants will also learn about lesser-known Chinese weapons adopted by Okinawan fighters, and examine farming and fishing implements adapted for defensive use by the people of the Ryukyu Kingdom. The presenters will demonstrate basic movements that illustrate the most common or unique attributes of these fighting implements, and answer questions.

About Ty Yocham:
Ty Yocham is one of the nation's foremost practitioners of goju-ryu karate, certified as a fifth-degree black belt in the style and designated as Shihan, or senior teacher. In addition, he has earned third-degree black belts in Ryukyu kobudo and in Okinawan hakutsuru (white crane) kenpo.
